The following 4 steps outline the process for donating solar panels and solar equipment to Good Sun.
1. Are the modules viable for reuse? Modules acceptable for donation need to be producing at least 50% of their rated power in order to be viable for our reuse projects. Please be prepared to show evidence that the modules have been tested and are in good working order.
Used solar modules MAY be considered hazardous waste by the Dept. of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). As such, there are specific requirements for the handling, transport, and storage of used solar modules. Click here to go to the California DTSC website to learn about these guidelines and requirements.
When decommissioning a solar project, it is the responsibility of the project/ property owner (or solar contractor) to know AND VERIFY that used solar panels destined for removal are still viable, i.e., still producing power and fit for reuse --- Or if the solar panels are not fit for reuse, i.e., not producing power, damaged beyond repair, etc. and need to go to an end-of-life recycler/ dismantler/ landfill.
Note: If the modules are not fit for reuse, we cannot accept them. Please contact a solar recycler such as Recycle PV Solar and We Recycle Solar.
Note: This responsibility may fall on the decommissioning contractor if such agreement is made between the system owner and the contractor.
These requirements only pertain to solar modules and not solar equipment such as inverters and racking.
2. Quantity and Type. We will need to know the quantity and exact make and model of any equipment being donated. This allows us to plan accordingly for pick up and transport. Please be prepared to provide this information up front.
3. Location & Schedule. For modules that need to be picked up at your location, please provide a pick up address and an estimated timeframe for pick up. We will need to communicate with you or your team to firm up a pick up date and time. For donations being delivered to our facility, please contact us to arrange delivery.
4. Contact Us. Once the above information is ready, send this information in an email to [email protected] or use the contact form below and we will respond to coordinate the donation if we are able to accept the equipment.
Once the equipment has been received by Good Sun, we will issue a donation receipt that can be used to verify the donation for your (or your client's) taxes.
Thank you for your generosity and your support of those in need.

Please note that the valuation of the donation is to be estimated by the donor. Good Sun cannot place a value on your donation. For donations valued over $5,000, the equipment must be appraised by a third party, i.e., not Good Sun and not the system owner.
